Difference Between Cracking and Reforming

Cracking:
Cracking is the process whereby complex molecules are broken down into simpler molecules :

Example : C36H74 + H2 ------> C2H6 + C34H70

Reforming:
Reforming is a process used to convert molecules having low octane ratings into hight- octane liquid products.

Example: CH3(CH2)6CH3 -----> CH3C(CH3)2CH2CH(CH3)CH3

  2. Actually Cracking word itself suggest craking of material, and after cracking definetly we get lower mol.wt.molecule.

    As wel Reform of Reforming suggest that arrangement of molecules without changing mol.wt. But ofcourse in terms of octane no. it increse it.

  8. Please can you mention the differences

  9. Sir but both processed usually improve the octane rating of low chain hydrocarbon (notably petrol). why should emphasize only pinpoint on reforming as the only process which eliminate engine knocking??
